On the Rebound: Fresh-cut
vegetables move forward after E. coli outbreak from spinach and
lettuce in 2006
Frozen Food Age - Melville, NY - 08/23/2007
Packaging appears to have come to the forefront.
Freshtables SteamPerfect is the first national brand to
come to market with the proprietary steaming microwave bags in the
United States," says Eckermann.
The Freshtables SteamPerfect line of fresh vegetables
and fruits with chef-created sauces comes in
unique steaming bags that steam the product in the microwave in just
about two minutes. The bag has an
invisible steaming valve that allows for pressure to build and safely
release at the end of the cooking
cycle. It is merchandised in produce sections (near the lettuce,
carrots, and salads) of grocery stores.
Eckermann believes the packaging will play "a more important
role in innovation. If you think about where
the most recent innovation has come from, it started with microwave
packaging. Now we've moved to
steaming packaging. It looks as though we are borrowing from some
of our neighboring categories. If we
continue to follow that process we will find packaging that will
support other cooking methods." She
believes that packaging is "going to be the key to providing
the convenience that consumers are looking
for. It (means) being able to deliver on freshness."... |

Packaging Styles,
Materials Changing for Fresh-Cut
Packer Online - Lenexa, KS - 07/27/2007
Packaging – always a crucial component in the fresh-produce
business – takes on even more importance when the product contained is fresh-cut,
manufacturers and shippers say. It's a simple matter of shelf life. But, they
add, shelf life is not exactly a simple matter.
"Any time you cut fruit and vegetables, you're going to
cut into its shelf life right there," said Todd Somers, vice president of
sales and marketing for Union City, Calif.-based Emerald Packaging. "So
there's always some sort of work going on in developing new packaging ideas."…
Packaging
manufacturers are constantly tweaking materials to gain more shelf life for precut
products, said Larry Narwold, vice president of sales for Eden Prairie, Minn.-based
The Sholl Group II, marketer of the Green Giant Fresh brand.
"The breathability and materials are constantly changing," he
said. |

The steaming bag technology for vegetables is
a trend heating up at several FMI booths this year. One example

Grocery store shelves are lined with
products promoting good health, eating fewer calories and dining
on smaller portions for cook-free, easy eats.
You've probably heard the usual excuses people give for not
improving their diets: no time, no cooking skills, can't stand the taste of "healthy" food
products. Maybe you've been relying on those cliches, even though you
know you should drop a few pounds or cut back on sodium to lower your blood pressure.
Apparently the food industry has been paying attention.
Food companies are introducing healthful products with greater
convenience and ease of preparation and improved flavor. You'll also see food
packaging with portion control designed to keep you from overeating. Everything
from chips to sodas to desserts are available in 100 calorie packages.
Several new products were recently introduced at the Food Marketing
Institute's supermarket industry tradeshow in Chicago, and will appear on supermarket
shelves this summer or in the fall. Here's a taste of what's good for you...
